Tickets are bought, accommodations arranged and anticipation at it’s highest! I am headed to Milan early next week to join the annual festivities for the Salone Internazionale del Mobili (Milan International Furniture Fair)! I have attended the last two years but never has it been so exciting! Every year it gets bigger and better… this year is no exception! I am so pumped to go to Karim Rashid’s Party too (thanks David!)
As I wrote last week, La Murrina will be debuting my project “Coutures” at EUROLUCE (Pad 14, stand E29-F30 Fiera Rho, MM1 Fiera Rho)
Another great project that you shouldn’t dare miss is Mr. Hyde – designed by Isaac Pinero, Pablo Crespo Pita, and Martin Franzen!

Every year in April, designers from all over the world venture to Milan Italy to attend one of the most important interior and furniture design shows, Salone di Mobile (Milan Furniture Fair). This year is the most important of all because La Murrina will debut my fantastic lamp design, Coutures!
The city transforms into a large showroom with events and shows all week. Apart from the fair there are smaller shows like Satellite (Young designers) and Euroluce (all about lighting and where you can find La Murrina) and of course showrooms around town. Some of my favs last year were Moooi and Tom Dixon at Superstudio Piu. Let me know if you are planning to attend and hopefully I will see you there!!!

As a new girl in London, everyday is a new adventure. Last Sunday I visited the Columbia Road Flower Market for the first time… and of course, I LOVED IT! The scents, the people, the quirky shops… just fabulous. I plan to be a regular flower junkie from now on… but what to wear?! What do you think about my outfit for next week???

I fancy strolling through the market sporting this 🙂

Fame in France..
French TV were here a few weeks ago filming a piece on David’s London home… It was broadcast yesterday. David and I got to watch it this morning over a cup of tea. I thought it was really cool, I mean I couldn’t understand a word, but David (being a shy and modest type) was blushing with embarrassment the entire time!! David’s lovely Italian assistant, Francesca, did most of the talking, which meant that David was able to avoid revealing just how rusty his French has become… David has made me promise not to publish details of where the show can be found on the internet, but it is well worth looking out for! (pm me for the link)

On a more modest note, David’s new boutique hotel, 40 WiNKS, is also planning to organize its own program of Strange and Wonderful events. David has been talking to Spoken Ink, a new audio book site devoted to short stories (www.spokenink.co.uk). They are not officially launching until June 09, but David has had his ear pressed to the ground and wants them to put on a series of intimate ‘Bedtime Story Nights’ at 40 WiNKS with tales of Love, Longing and Lust.. Also under discussion is a possible collaboration with the very talented Scottish installation artist, Laura Yuile. David is very keen on the idea of a burlesque inspired shadow puppet show to be performed in the windows of the house, but from what I can gather I am not sure that Laura necessarily shares his enthusiasm. I will keep you posted on all the dates, creative differences and behind-the- scenes gossip, but David is hoping to have the first events up and running in June… so keep logging on to alacarterstyle! Numbers will be strictly limited.

As if he isn’t busy enough already, David has just opened ‘40 WiNKS’ – the world’s smallest boutique hotel!! Well, that’s how he’s cheekily describing it…. What it lacks in the staffing and room service departments is more than made up for by its seductive ambiance. If you haven’t heard about it yet, you will. In the meantime, check out the blurb….
The blurb:
How would you like to spend the night in one of London’s sexiest and most glamorous houses for less than it costs to stay in a Travelodge?
Affordable style and luxury really have arrived in town in the form of 40 WiNKS, London’s newest, and possibly smallest, boutique hotel.
Launched to coincide with London Fashion Week, 40 WiNKS is the concept of internationally celebrated interior designer, David Carter. His London residence is not only regularly featured in many of the world’s top interiors magazines, but, as one of London’s best-loved location houses, also plays host to a stream of famous actors, models and popstars who come there to be photographed for high-end fashion spreads and major advertising campaigns.
David’s beautifully restored four storey Queen Anne townhouse was built in 1717, and is situated in trendy and vibrant East London – the playground de jour for London’s artistic set. Although boasting just two bijou guest bedrooms, he decided to open 40 WiNKS to provide people in the fashion and creative industries with somewhere fun and different to stay when they are in town for work or pleasure. “East London is where many of the photographers, stylists, models and magazine people I work with want to hang out in the evenings, and there is almost nowhere for them to stop over around here. It just seemed like a natural extension to what I am already doing…” says David. “Many of my best friends work in the industry, so it’s also a great way of meeting new people who like the same sort of things I do.”
With A List visitors, and the likes of Vogue, Tatler and Elle shooting there, 40 WiNKS can certainly claim to be one of London’s most fashion-friendly and glamorous places to stay. “Bold, romantic and fantastical” is how one major American magazine described it. But with the single bedroom at just £65 a night and the double bedroom at £80 a night, David has also pitched his prices to appeal to even the most bargain-conscious fashionista. “It’s not about making loads and loads of money.” says David, who runs his own very successful interior design business, “The house has a special, magical quality to it, and I love having people here. If I didn’t I wouldn’t have been running it as a location for such a long time.” He does, however, have ambitious plans for 40 WiNKS, and is already in discussions with a number of high profile brands who are interested in working with him. Over the next two or three years, he would like to open branches in all the world’s major fashion capitals, so New York, Paris and Milan watch out… you may be waking up to a 40 WiNKS very soon!!

For those of you who haven’t had the pleasure of meeting Kelli yet, I can say that you are in for a real treat! Kelli only joined David Carter Interior Design about a month ago, but recruiting her is without doubt the best decision of my entire professional career… some of those who know me well might even say that it’s the only good decision I have made in the last sixteen years. Not only is she super bright (she has a degree from the University of Florida in Interior Design and a Masters from the fabulous sounding Scuola Politecnica Di Design in Milan), but she also has the biggest smile in London! And as she is far too modest to mention it, I would like to tell you that she has just heard that La Murrina in Italy are going to be putting one of her lighting designs into production. It is rather appropriately called ‘Coutures’, and can be seen at the Euroluce Show in April. If you would like your design advice served sunny side up, make sure you ask for Kelli, rather than me, when you call us…
